In a state with more than 1,000 school districts, just five educators were named 2027 California Teachers of the Year and four were recognized as statewide finalists. Mrs. Walters is one of those four finalists, an exceptional achievement that brings pride to Dr. Peter Marshall School and the entire Magnolia School District.
Tony Thurmond, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, announced the recognition on October 8, 2026. The California Teachers of the Year program honors exceptional educators for their dedication to students, schools, and communities, and highlights educational innovation and student learning.
Mrs. Walters creates a classroom where high expectations and caring relationships help students build a strong foundation for learning. She responds to each child’s academic and social-emotional needs, providing individualized support and encouragement so students feel safe, connected, and ready to succeed.
Her commitment extends beyond daily instruction. Through partnerships with families, culturally responsive lessons, and hands-on learning, Mrs. Walters helps students develop confidence and a sense of belonging. Her work with Disney Musicals in Schools has also expanded opportunities for students to express themselves and collaborate through the performing arts.
“What ultimately sets Mrs. Walters apart is her consistency and passion,” Principal Alma Guzman shared in the District’s earlier recognition of Mrs. Walters.
The state selection process includes a review of applications, classroom evaluations, and interviews. Educators are considered for their teaching techniques, classroom environments, and ability to connect with students.
Magnolia School District congratulates Mrs. Walters on this well-deserved recognition and thanks her for the care, creativity, and dedication she brings to our students each day.
